A devastating incident in New Jersey has left a community reeling, as a street racing accident resulted in the loss of a young mother’s life, leaving her husband facing serious charges.
A recent news story out of Middlesex County, New Jersey, has highlighted the dangers of street racing, as a 32-year-old man, Benjamin Futerman, was charged with aggravated manslaughter and vehicular homicide after his wife, 31-year-old Kristina Godich, died in a street racing crash. The incident occurred on June 2 at approximately 1 am on Route 9 in Old Bridge, New Jersey.
According to investigators, Futerman’s BMW was traveling at more than twice the posted speed limit of 55 mph when it crashed. The data event recorder from the vehicle, combined with surveillance footage, revealed the shocking speed at which the car was traveling. Futerman was hospitalized for several days due to injuries sustained in the wreck.
The driver of the other vehicle involved in the street racing incident, 22-year-old Wilson Familia of Old Bridge, was driving a Ford Mustang. Both cars crashed, resulting in three passengers in Familia’s vehicle being treated at a hospital for injuries. Familia was charged with aggravated assault, assault by auto, and two counts of aggravated assault.
In a moment of both drivers wanting to have fun, prove who was the better driver, or see which car was fastest, lives were forever altered. Not only did Futerman lose his wife, he might spend time incarcerated. Familia could end up behind bars as well.
Street racing is often perceived as harmless fun, but the reality is that it poses significant risks to drivers and innocent bystanders. In contrast, racing on a track or drag strip provides a controlled environment, often with first responders on scene and ready to assist. While it may come with a cost, the value of a loved one’s life cannot be measured.
