Survivor’s Tale: Escaping the Nova Music Festival Terror—A Journey of Survival and Hope
Introduction On a fateful October day in 2023, Mazal Tazazo’s world was torn apart by a brutal attack at the Nova Music Festival, marking the beginning of her fight for survival.
The Horrific Attack “I had to choose between being burned alive or being shot,” she recounts with a tremor in her voice. The festival had turned into a nightmare as chaos erupted and survival instincts kicked in.
The Fight for Survival “We managed to reach Route 232, what we now call the highway to hell,” Mazal recalls. In a desperate bid to evade their attackers, she and her friends abandoned their car, seeking refuge behind roadside bushes. “Unfortunately, we couldn’t conceal ourselves,” she continues. The militants were relentless. Mazal was struck on the head with a rifle butt, and her friends were brutally murdered before her eyes. Bound by her legs, Mazal’s captors intended to take her, but in a stroke of desperate ingenuity, she played dead. Believing her lifeless, they abandoned her and set the area ablaze.
Seeking Refuge Confronted with the terrifying choice of burning to death or risking gunfire, Mazal chose to flee from the encroaching flames. She found temporary refuge in a car, where she sat for two agonizing hours. “Around 3 p.m., an angel—another Nova survivor—came and drove me and four other survivors to safety,” she recalls with gratitude.
The Escape Reflecting on those harrowing moments, Mazal describes operating on autopilot, her mind unable to fully process the nightmare unfolding around her. “It felt like a hallucination, and all I could do was pray to God to end the madness. It felt like a movie, but unfortunately, it was a painful and brutal reality.”
The Aftermath Mazal is acutely aware of the skepticism some harbor about the events of that day. “There are many people worldwide who deny these events happened, probably because the human mind can’t comprehend that someone could commit such horrific atrocities,” she notes. But Mazal is determined to ensure the truth is known. “It did happen, and our goal is to bring this reality, with all its harshness, right to their faces.”
Spreading the Truth Her story is a stark reminder of the brutality of that day and a testament to the resilience of those who survived. Mazal Tazazo’s harrowing escape from the Nova Music Festival attack stands as a poignant narrative of survival against all odds.
